What Childhood Memories Are Made Of – Create Some Today

How fantastic is it when just the smell of a crisp late September Sunday morning brings back the memory of a weekly family tradition? Once the roast lunch was in the oven set to low and the sun had warmed to cast a haze of orange nostalgia over the brown tinged trees at our local woodland that was the sign to pull on our boots grab the dog and head off for our walk. It was always more of a nature trail than just a walk and no matter what time of the year something was always happening in the woods.

Spring saw the beauty of new beginnings, tiny snowdrop, and crocus heads dancing above the dark woodland floor stretching to touch the suns warmth. Summer came the carefree games of the squirrels jumping from tree to tree to find a mate and the sweet song of the black bird calling us to the woods. Autumn the harvest, trees laden with their proud produce, blackberry bushes bursting with their sweet treasures. Then finally, winter, the cold cleansing snow, glistening icicles from damp bare branches, a crunch with each step home and a promise of a hot delicious hearty roast dinner cooked by the best chef in my world, Mum.

I treasure my childhood memories, my parents always seemed to have fantastic ideas to keep myself and my brother entertained, the focus was always on fun and I do remember a lot of laughter. Perhaps I am just seeing the past through rose-tinted glasses or the fact that in the 70s/80s the majority of kids had a stay at home mum and a family budget of a shoestring. Thus resulting in more time with the kids and the need to create toys and games out of next to nothing, but times have changed and today’s financial demands give parents no option but to work and by the time the weekend free time arrives we are all a bit too exhausted to dream up the next fun activity.
